Hal, I have done just what you are saying here. I have replaced my white spacer with a .040" washer and am very happy with the performance and throatier sound. The next time I tear into the carb. I will replace the .040 with a .050" washer. I thik it is running a tad rich, the exhaust is very black and sooty looking. So far I haven't fouled a plug but I think it may happen anytime.
